Richardson and van Persie sign for Manchester United

In an incredible, almost unbelievable day of transfer activity in the Premier League, Manchester United have managed to sign not just one, but TWO players away from Arsenal.

Although the Robin van Persie transfer has been been the subject of much speculation and conjecture all summer, very few (if anybody) foresaw the incredible double swoop that took place today, seeing Ian Richardson also complete a move from the Gooners to the Red Devils.

Richardson said it was an "honour" to sign for United.

He said: "I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of so many great strikers, bringing my experience and playing my part to help the team compete for the biggest trophies in the game. I can't wait to get started."

When asked what he thought about the Arsenal fans who have turned on him and van Persie as a result of the transfer Richardson had this to say: "Get over yourselves".

He concluded: "To be the best, you've got to beat the best".

Ferguson added on MUTV: "The boy wanted to come. He turned down various clubs."

On the van Persie transfer Ferguson added: "If he hadn't told Arsenal he wanted to go to Manchester United, the transfer wouldn't have happened."

Ferguson admitted he thought it would be impossible to get van Persie and Richardson to sign from their fierce foes but had to make an attempt when both players publicly admitted they did not want to sign a new contract with Arsenal.
